Helpin' with Codin'

Been working on the new book for while now - the pitch is that I'm going to help designers understand how web sites - the real ones that are connected to databases and can let you shop, blog and do other interactive things - are actually built so that you can work effectively with programming teams or actually start learning to program yourself. So if you have input about what you want to know in this area or what is hard to make sense of, there's still time for me to drill down into areas that really matter to you. After all, this isn't for me, but you.

I have always wished to set up a site that sells things.

Are you covering installation of shopping carts?, or links to those that are good ones. Preferably for now freeware ones.

Information on merchant accounts.

With blogs, any information regarding referal spam and how to battle it? And with a blog can you add adsense to this software? What is the best and easiest blogware availble?

Is it better to set up your own shop, or to incorporate it into ebay for selling more? And is ebay worth it for selling more if you link to it?

Is it worth it to learn php? And how difficult is it to learn. Say in relation to learning CSS.

Hello Charles,

I was wondering what technologies you are covering in your new book "Codin" -- ASP, PHP, Cold Fusion, etc. -- and what databases you will cover -- Access, SQL Server, MySQL, etc?

Whatever you choose to cover though, I'll be in line to snap up a copy to take advantage of your clear writing style.

Thank you for your books!
James

I've been working a lot with video, script.aculo.us and dojo. Any experiences with the above would be helpful. As far as I can tell this is all pioneer territory, more on the video than AJAX side.

Also, please cover tools.

I've been using Dreamweaver for years and now that I'm out of tables I'm finding it far more of an impediment than enabler. It color codes and adds in missing end tags, but the design pane is a pain in the ass. I am almost always only using it in code view, which is a real waste of $600.

I've found most open-source tools to be even worse than dreamweaver, but I can't say that I've explored the terrain in 3 or so years.

Are there any decent css validators? At least javascript has alert(). I have no idea how to know if I've made a mistake with css.

Thanks!

Please, please, please - even though there's a determined camp to use anything but, could you possibly include developing in .Net using Active Server Pages? Of course it's ridiculously close to the publishing deadline to make such a request, but hey, you pulled off a great job with Stylin' with CSS, and it didn't kill you (too badly).

Based on how much and how quickly I gleaned valuable information from your CSS book, if you covered .asp, I might actually get to take a vacation this decade!

Am really looking forward to your new book. One thing I would like to understand is how to connect a database (specifically, Access) to a website with database manipulation controls. I'd like to access a multiuser client database in such a way that (a) the user would log in and only have access to his/her list, (b) would be able to add/delete/modify the list and (c) be able to download the list as text and/or print the list.

I know, lots to ask, but then, you seem like a pretty smart guy!

Regards - Mike

Hi Charles . .

I purchased Stylin' some time ago, and if books wore out like cassette tapes (does anyone remember those?), this book would be completely unreadable.

I have a question regarding the horizontal drop downs. I have the element div#listmenu set at 100%, but my text is stacking instead of stretching to fit the constraints of the LI.

Also, how does one go about centering the navigation on a 760px page? I have tried everything to no avail.

That is it for now. I just finished ordering your new book, and am looking forward to devouring every page!!

Sincerely,
Bryan Z
